About SCAN

SCAN is a registered charity rescuing and re-homing abandoned cats and dogs in the northern Costa Blanca. Many animals arriving at our shelter have been abused, are sick, starving, and some are only hours away from death. Animals leaving our shelter go to live in caring, loving homes, never again to be maltreated or go hungry.

SCAN has pledged a NO KILL policy for healthy animals: we keep the promise we make to every cat and dog that enters our shelter: “You're a SCAN animal now, you're safe.”

Our mission is protect those who cannot speak for themselves. We:

  • RESCUE animals in danger
  • CARE for them by providing a proper diet, veterinary care, and safe, comfortable, dry accommodation
  • REHOME them in forever homes, so they can get on with enjoying the rest of their lives

From the moment the animal enters our shelter, they are given everything they need to recover and thrive. We work closely with the local authorities, the police and the local vets. Everyone involved is focussed on the welfare and Care of Animals in Need.

From our purpose built Centre we run our Adoptions Programme, possibly the most active and effective in the area. The statistics for this initiative are staggering: as of March 2018, 96%. of our animals have been adopted from SCAN, locally in Spain and to the UK, Guernsey and the Channel Islands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Finland and the USA.

We are dedicated both to a set of international guidelines for animal welfare known as “The Five Freedoms of Animal Care” and the principles on which we were founded: that we will always be Committed, Caring, Effective, and Compassionate.

SCAN does not receive any money from local, regional or national government. We are financed entirely by the generosity of SCAN supporters around the world, proceeds from our Events programme, the SCAN Boutique and our collection tins. Because we are independently funded, we operate free of centrally imposed quotas and management protocols that would put the welfare of our animals at risk.
