About SCAN

SCAN is a registered charity in the northern Costa Blanca rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned cats and dogs.  Many animals arriving at our Shelter are abused, sick, starving, and some have been only hours away from death.  Animals leaving our shelter go to caring, loving forever homes, never again to be maltreated.

SCAN has a NO KILL policy for healthy animals.  From the moment an animal enters our Shelter, it is given everything it needs to recover and to thrive. We keep the promise we make to every cat and dog that enters our shelter: “You're a SCAN animal now, you're safe.”

We work closely with the local authorities, the police and the local vets.  Everyone involved is focussed on the welfare and Care of Animals in Need.  Our mission is protect those who cannot speak for themselves. We:

  • RESCUE animals in danger
  • CARE for them by providing a proper diet, veterinary care, and safe, comfortable, dry accommodation
  • REHOME them in forever homes, so they can enjoy the rest of their lives

From our purpose built Centre we run our Adoptions Programme, possibly the most active and effective in the area.  The statistics for this initiative are staggering: as at March 2018, 96% of our animals were adopted, either locally in Spain or internationally to the UK, Guernsey and the Channel Islands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Finland and the USA.

We are dedicated both to a set of international guidelines for animal welfare known as “The Five Freedoms of Animal Care” and the principles on which we were founded: that we will always be Committed, Caring, Effective, and Compassionate.

SCAN does not receive any money from local, regional or national government.  We are financed entirely by the generosity of our supporters around the world, by the proceeds of our Events, by sales at the SCAN Boutique, and by small change dropped into our collection tins.  Because we are independently funded, we operate free of centrally imposed quotas and management protocols that would put the welfare of our animals at risk.
