SCAN History

In 2009 SCAN stared as an organisation raising funds for cat rescue organisation in Pego, with its own shelter opened for cats  in 2010.

This original shelter was under pressure to close in 2011 which was, of course, unacceptable, so, in conjunction with with the El Verger Ayuntamiento, the SCAN team began planning and design for a new purpose built shelter that could house abandoned dogs and cats.

In 2012 the new purpose built shelter was opened by Alcalde D. Miguel Gonzalez Baño and Lord and Lady Acton. Funds for the build were raised from the fundraising activities in the community and the land was leased from the Ayuntamiento for the first 15 year period, with a subsequent renewable lease in effect.

The shelter is a Centre for Excellence as awarded by the Nucleo Zoologico: one of only two shelters in this part of Spain with this accreditation.

In 2014 fundraising was accelerated by the opening of the SCAN Charity Boutique in El Verger, a store offering fashion, household goods and more.

Since the shelter was opened in 2012, more than 2,800 animals have been rehomed!

And there are expansion plans on the horizon. SCAN hopes to open:

  • Old cats and dogs home. SCAN has been given permission by the Ayuntamiento to extend the centre beyond its original footprint, with the plan being to build a “retirement home” for the long term residents and animals nearing the end of their lives. This will give them a more peaceful existence and more living space, both indoors and out, enabling them to roam between the two without constraint.
  • An enhanced play area for the cats. Cats benefit enormously from play. It helps with behavioural problems, obesity and stress. It helps too with tension between cats and builds confidence, particularly in shy animals. This project will be of enormous benefit to SCAN's feline friends making their time in the shelter more comfortable and increase their chances of an early adoption.
  • A ramp in the BBQ area to ease access for wheelchairs and those who find steps difficult.
  • To demolish a wooden shed and replace it with a metal building suitable for bulk food storage
  • An upgrade of the dog exercise area with new ramps and a swimming pond, with upgrades of the shelter itself underway now.
