SCAN started life in 2009 in Pego as a cat rescue organisation. By 2011 planning had already begun for tailor-made premises in El Verger that would receive both cats and dogs. The SCAN Centre was opened in October 2012 by the Mayor of El Verger, D. Miquel González Baño and Lord and Lady Acton.
SCAN’s motto is “Somos su voz, We are your voice” and our Mission is to protect those who cannot speak for themselves; the animals.
We are dedicated both to a set of international guidelines for animal welfare known as “The Five Freedoms of Animal Care” and the principles on which we were founded: that we will always be Committed, Caring, Effective, and Compassionate.
We are committed to a no kill policy. In keeping with our founding principles, SCAN will never put a healthy animal down. We keep the promise we make to every cat and dog we rescue: “You're a SCAN animal now, you're safe.”
SCAN does not receive any money from local, regional or national government. We are financed entirely by the generosity of SCAN supporters around the world, proceeds from our Events programme, the SCAN Boutique and the change for good received in our collection tins. Because we are independently financed, we operate free of centrally imposed quotas and management protocols that would put the welfare of our animals at risk. And, also we can offer impartial advice to the Town Halls to help them understand the evolving legislative framework. More information on fundraising can be found on the How you can help link at the top of the page.
SCAN has a reputation for quality of care, for high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, and for keeping our promises. By March 2018 we had given new lives to over 2000 animals.
The excellence of our hygiene and administrative processes has won us the coveted Núcleo Zoológico accreditation. This is a National and Regional set of standards for organisations dealing with animals. Only shelters with this accreditation are able to transport animals across international borders.
SCAN volunteers are justifiably proud of the work they do. Every animal that passes through our shelter, every animal that goes on to a forever home is a life saved and a life immeasurably improved. It’s hard work at times, but incredibly rewarding. Volunteers witness amazing events: they get to see distressed, petrified and sick animals being admitted to the Centre; they watch the transformation as the animals are cared for; and they then see animals rehomed as vibrant, happy souls, full of life and love. Video clips of SCAN cats and dogs playing happily in their forever homes and visits from past residents and new owners are reward enough. That’s all everyone at SCAN wants; to know that the cats and dogs we have worked tirelessly to protect are in a loving home, finally having a good life.
Our purpose built Centre has been designed to provide a light, airy and clean living environment for all of the Animals under SCAN´s care. Facilities include secure animal shelters, an on-site veterinary treatment room, an office, storage areas, and kitchens. The Centre, in a newly developed industrial zone on land donated by the El Verger Ayuntamiento, meets the exacting standards required of a modern and compliant Animal Facility.
Our vet visits the Centre once a week to assess new arrivals and examine animals giving cause for concern. This approach enables problems to be caught early, helping to avoid complex treatments and unnecessary suffering for the animals.
The Centre boasts 1400m2 of exercise, play and training areas and a BBQ Garden where we hold a number of fundraising events.
From the Centre we run our Adoptions Programme, possibly the most active and effective in the area. The statistics for this initiative are staggering: as of March 2018, 96%. of our animals have been adopted from SCAN, locally in Spain and to the UK, Guernsey and the Channel Islands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Finland and the USA.
